The Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement for the Propagation of Islam (Guyana Ahmadiyya Anjuman Ishaat Islam Lahore – GAAIIL) played a pivotal role in shaping Islam’s history in Guyana. They were instrumental in introducing prayers for women in mosques and enabling women to make presentations on Islam in mixed gatherings. Islam spread through early efforts by figures like M.I. Doekie of Canje Berbice, who imported Urdu and Hindi books—including Ahmadi books published in India long before 1949, the year he performed Hajj. His relatives embraced Ahmadiyya views, joining the Anjuman. Islamic Review publications from London reached Guyana, particularly Corentyne, in the early 1900s. Missionaries visited Guyana from the 1920s to 1940s; Jaggie from Suriname and Maulana Tufail in the 1950s strengthened ties with Lahore and other Jama’ats. Pioneers like Mursaline Maji, Uncle Babu-Rahaman, Mohamed Amin, Mohamed Basir, Ahmad (Charity), Jamal, and MBZ Yasin contributed across regions. Moulvi Rasheed, Guyana’s first missionary in the 1950s, revolutionized outreach by preaching in English beyond mosques—into schools, radio, and later television. Dr. Rahat of Wakenaam served as GAAIIL’s first President, maintaining links with Maulana Muhammad Ali. During Guyana’s difficult years, Lahore, Trinidad, and Suriname played pivotal roles in supporting propagation efforts. GAAIIL continues its legacy through education, translation, and interfaith work. Jama’ats across the country aligned with the Anjuman, and several were established. In 1955, the first headquarters was established in Georgetown at Louisa Row. In 1986, the Brickdam Mosque was completed, marking both a milestone and the tragedy of the martyrdom of Muhammad Anwar Shaheed in Georgetown.
